No going back.
Yesterday, I gave notice with the rental
agency.
We received a letter in the mail just a few days
before telling us they were increasing our rent. Granted, it was only a $50
increase, but I still thought it was pretty nervy considering the work that
needs to be done on this place - the hole in the wall, leaky taps, and a
lighting fixture in the courtyard that's shorting out. (Definitely not good!)
When the agent, Marilyn, asked if we were moving because of the rent increase, I
was honest and said that we weren't but that I thought it was pretty outrageous
of them to raise the rent when these problems have remained unaddressed for
nearly four months, now. She completely ignored the comment and said, "Okay, I
was just checking". Zero reaction. How disappointing but not unexpected, I
suppose.
Earlier in the day, we confirmed
the moving company for the 7th. Apparently, they'll take all of our stuff
through customs in Edmonton, and then put it all into storage for us - we don't
even need to be there. That sounds too good to be true to me, but if that's the
case, we probably will take an extra day or two over the drive, make a few extra
stops, and hope to get to Edmonton no later than the 14th. The kids won't go as
crazy, we'll get to see a few sites, and the driving won't be as taxing. Expect
pictures and video clips to start appearing in this
blog!
Wendy and I both had a perfect day
today, considering the move we're about to make. I had a dentist appointment to
have my teeth cleaned. After the examination, etc. (I haven't been to a dentist
since we moved up here two years ago), the dentist recommend that I have some
sort of "deep cleaning" thing, and they wanted to charge me $540 for it! I'm
just going to go to Frank, the hygenist in the Valley I've gone to for years,
and pay $60. He always does a great job. A couple of hours later, Wendy went
to see the doctor about her sinus infection. Because she's breast-feeding AND
allergic to penicillin, they had to prescribe something very specific, and the
prescription cost $165 to fill! As you read this, you have to bear in mind that
we pay about $6,000 a year for our medical insurance policy. I've never been an
advocate of socialised medicine, but I'm going to have to sit down and really
re-examine my stance on that one... 'cause this is NOT working! I feel like I'm
being extorted.
